A beaming ceiling dubbed a ‘sky made of light’ has broken the record for the largest continuous illuminated ceiling.

Zumtobel Lighting (Austria) specializes in the development, production, and sales of lighting for indoor and outdoor applications.

It was unveiled at the Light + Building 2024 event in Frankfurt, Germany, and measures 202.76 m² (2,182 .49 ft²).

Zumtobel were able to achieve this in cooperation with their manufacturing partner Typico by using a standard product that they developed called CIELUMA.

CIELUMA is a special textile light system that can illuminate ceilings to unspecified limitations. It was here that Zumtobel knew they had a potential world record on their hands.

There are three major parts to the ceiling - an aluminium frame, LED plates that cover the backside of the frame, and fabric layers inside.

The encapsulating sheer design of the ceiling was chosen to help creating a perfect imitation of daylight inside of buildings.

This is further reinforced by the ceiling projecting a homogenous light with no splices, joints, or other elements.

Zumtobel hope that this design will help visitors or employees become more focused, motivated and have a greater sense of well-being.

It took five days for the ceiling to be installed on-site by specialists on sky lifters.

To ensure that accurate measurements were taken of the ceiling, a laser range meter was used and taken by an independent surveyor.

For the record to be successful, the brightness of the whole illuminated ceiling had to exceed 300 lumens/m2.

Once both measurements were confirmed, Official Guinness World Records Adjudicator Seyda Subasi-Gemici presented the certificate to Zumtobel.

We are passionate about designing and producing the highest quality of light. Our work is driven by the knowledge that the right light can create the right environment for people to thrive when tailored to their individual needs. As we develop the next generation of lighting, we build on our family heritage to refine the aesthetics of light and shape the lighting of tomorrow. With a special blend of passion, grace, and avant-garde ideas, we turn light into an experience and remain committed to improving the quality of life through light. - Zumtobel

After the trade fair ended, the ceiling was dismantled for use in upcoming lighting products.
